Leicestershire County Council has advised that the roadworks causing motorists travelling through Melton a headache should be over this afternoon (Wednesday).

Simple short journeys across the town were taking up to an hour during Tuesday evenings rush hour due to temporary traffic lights on Dalby Road at the junction of Leicester Road.

Some residents say a short trip which would normally take 10 minutes took up to an hour due to poor traffic management and traffic lights seeming to only let a couple of cars through at a time.

This afternoon (Wednesday) a Leicestershire County Council spokesperson told NEMM this was due to emergency works being carried out following a road traffic collision.

It appears that a traffic signal was damaged and knocked on Dalby Road at the crossing near BP which required fixing and the temporary traffic lights to be installed.

A County Council Spokesperson told NEMM: "“Emergency temporary traffic lights are in place on Leicester Road in Melton Mowbray, following a road traffic collision (RTC), which knocked down a traffic signal yesterday afternoon. An additional unrelated RTC also occurred close by during this time, which caused additional delays.

Repair work is being carried out and expected to finish this afternoon, with the highway restored to normal.”

Residents have discussed their anger on local Facebook forums with some worried what the future might hold for the town's roads with more housing being built and limited infrastructure.

Local businesses were also saying how it was having an affect on them and their customers.

It comes as Melton Borough Council are set to hear about developers plans to build on the former Jeld Wen site in Snow Hill during their planning committee meeting tomorrow.
