'Resist the urge' warn police as Fatal 4 operation sees multiple people fined for mobile phone use at the wheel

Officers from Leicestershire Police's Roads Policing Unit along with local units carried out a traffic operation in Melton yesterday resulting in a number of offences being recorded.

The 'Fatal 4' operation took place along Wilton Road which looks for the main 4 impact factors for collisions resulting in serious injury or death on UK roads. These are; speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and mobile phone use at the wheel.

Posting an update on social media Rutland Police said: "Today over a short space of time 11 Traffic Offence Reports were issued to vehicles in relation to multiple offences, including the ‘Fatal 4’ factors.

One of the biggest takeaways from today is – it is so unfortunate to see so many people still using their mobile phone whilst driving.

Please resist the urge, put your phone in a bag, glovebox, or keep it in your pocket and use a handsfree connection whilst you are behind the wheel.

If you can’t do this and it is that urgent to answer your phone, or read and respond to the text message, then pull over somewhere safe.

Using your phone whilst driving carries a penalty of 6 points on your license and a fine of up to £1,000. The legislation includes texting, making non-hands-free calls and using your device for navigation.

Don’t get caught out, it’s not worth your license and it’s definitely not worth risking your own, or someone else’s life."

Drivers with car seats were also educated on how to transport children safely.
