Production to cease at Melton dairy site

Updated: Jul 1

Arla Foods which operates Melton's Tuxford and Tebbutt Creamery in Thorpe End has announced it plans to stop production at the site.

The diary, which has operatred for more than 200 years, produces Stilton Cheese and employs around 60 people.

The news comes as another blow to the Melton economy as Holwell Works is also set to close by the end of the year.

Fran Ball, Vice President of production at Arla Foods said that staff at the site were told the news on Friday morning.

She said: "Today Arla Foods has announced its proposal to cease production at Arla Melton Mowbray Creamery UK. This morning, we have spoken to our colleagues who are affected by these proposals and we are now entering in to a period of consultation with those colleagues. Our priority right now is to support our colleagues impacted during this challenging period.”

Earlier this year Arla announced that it was organising a 'strategic review' in to the site and was exploring the market for any buyers of the site.

It has not been confirmed when the site will cease production.
