A historic bridge is in need of repair after being hit by a car in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).
A patrolling police officer came across a car which had left the road in Wilton Road near the junction of Leicester Street after colliding with the Lady Wilton Bridge.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 12.15am today (Tuesday 31 January), an officer on patrol came across a car which had left the road in Wilton Road, Melton.
Both occupants were located unharmed. It was established the car had also collided with a bridge. No arrests were made and enquiries into the incident are continuing."

The Lady Wilton Bridge was first built in 1822 and carries the A607 over the River Eye.
Leicestershire Fire & Rescue service confirmed they did not attend the incident.
