Dove Cottage Day Hospice has announced it has taken the decision to close its Tea Room in Stathern with immediate effect.
Announcing the news this evening (Monday) a spokesperson said: “Dove Cottage Day Hospice, a well-loved local charity providing support to individuals with life-limiting illnesses, is closing its popular Tea Room at Canal Lane to focus resource on its
care services.”
The Dove Cottage Tea Room has been a popular community café for many
years, providing a warm, welcoming space and contributing vital funds to the hospice.
However, increasing costs have meant the Tea Room is no longer profitable or sustainable
for the hospice to run.
In a statement the hospice said: “While the Tea Room has provided a valued service to the local community, the cost of the operation has steadily increased, and its ability to contribute to the charity’s income has declined. As Dove Cottage remains funded by voluntary donations, the charity’s trustees have taken this difficult decision to ensure that their primary mission of providing high- quality care for guests and their families remains their first priority.”
Dan Smeeton, Dove Cottage Day Hospice Chief Executive Officer said: “The Dove Cottage Tea Room has been a much-loved part of our community for years, and the decision to close it has been incredibly difficult. However, The Tea Rooms rising costs, limited indoor seating space and steady decline of customers means that it has become substantially less profitable in recent times and has forced us to consider where our funds will have the most impact.
“Over the years we’ve had incredible support from our amazing volunteers and staff in the
Tea Room and have received such wonderful support from our loyal customers.
We will miss each one dearly, but our priority will always be the care and support we provide to those who rely on us the most."
Sustaining Dove Cottage’s vital services
Dove Cottage continues to offer vital services such as symptom management, emotional
support, and day care to guests and their families.
The charity’s focus is on ensuring that
these essential services remain fully funded, even if it means difficult decisions, such as the
closure of the Tea Room.
The charity is calling on supporters, both new and old, to help keep its services fully operational through donations, community fundraising and supporting its charity shops.
Dan added "We’ve been fortunate to have incredible support from our local community over the years,"
“While it’s sad to have to close the Tea Room, we remain focused on delivering the best possible care. We encourage anyone who can to continue supporting us so that we can keep providing the services that make such a difference in people’s lives."
Dove Cottage Day Hospice say they remain committed to its patients and their families, and it is through the generosity of supporters that this work can continue.
The charity shop that is based upstairs in the tea-room building will remain open as normal, along with the three other shops in Bottesford, Cotgrave and Asfordby.
Anyone wishing to help can make
donations through www.dovecottage.org or by contacting the hospice on 01949 860303.
