Council issues warning over Country Park bridge as flooding causes major problems

Melton Borough Council has warned residents not to use the wooden bridge by the stepping stones in Melton Country Park due to excess rainfall.

Following recent heavy rainfall and snow water levels have risen at Melton's Country Park and this has caused the bridge and stepping stones to be covered in floodwater.

In a statement on social media, the local authority said: "The wooden bridge by the stepping stones at the Country Park has become damaged and come away following the unprecedented rainfall we have had over the weekend.

We currently don’t know the extent of the damage and we will not be able to investigate this until the waters recede. We anticipate that the bridge will be out of use for a number of weeks. In the meantime, do not attempt to cross the lake near the stepping stones as we predict it will be unsafe.

Thank you for your understanding."

Recent heavy rainfall has caused a number of issues locally including flooding of homes and businesses in the Borough and the closure of some roads.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service along with East Midlands Ambulance Service have both declared major incidents due to pressures on their services.

Over the last 24 hours, Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service has responded to 380 calls and attended 56 flooding incidents. Many residents have been evacuated or self-evacuated from houses, boats and caravans.

Assistant Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, Judi Beresford, said; "We are incredibly proud of our crews, Control and staff for all their outstanding work and efforts during this major incident. We also want to thank the public for their support so far and urge them to continue following safety advice, such as avoiding flooded areas, not driving through floodwater, and checking on vulnerable neighbours. These small actions can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe."
